The Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck trailer offers an intimate first look at the upcoming documentary about the musician’s short life.

The trailer for the authorized biography Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck was released today.

The trailer opens with footage of Cobain as a young child, smiling, playing toy guitars, and blowing out birthday candles.

When prompted by a female voice off-screen, "Who are you, Kurt?" the enthusiastic little boys replies, "I'm Kurt Cobain!", evidently unaware what his name will come to mean in music history and to his generation in later decades.

The authorized biography was directed by Brett Morgen and took over seven years to make. Cobain's daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, served as an executive producer on the film.

The film combines Cobain's journals and other writings, unreleased audio, home videos, and interviews with his friends and families to tell the story of Cobain's troubled early years and his subsequent rise to fame as the front man and lead guitarist for Nirvana.

Cobain's family life with his wife Courtney Love and their infant daughter is featured heavily in the trailer.

Though the relationship between Love and Cobain is often remembered as chaotic, the footage reveals happy and loving moments with the young family. Morgen told Vanity Fair earlier this year that after Frances Bean saw the film at Sundance, she said, "You made the film I wanted to see."
