Things didn’t go to plan for this would-be burglar, who tried to get in to Nottingham Trent University but ended up hanging around upside down for five hours.

The Tab reports that Dan De-Niet, 20, and Tom Burdett, 19, were on their way home after a night out and, after realising he wasn't a student, called the police. The window had to be broken to get him out.

De-Niet told The Tab: "I was unsure where the noise was coming from but when I looked up and found him screaming and crying I tried to help by talking to him whilst at the same time taking loads of photos and videos."

Burdett added: "The thing I found the funniest was that he'd tried to hide his dignity by tucking his t-shirt into his trousers. He didn't exactly do a great job."

Police later named the man as Carl Attar, 27, who was charged with burglary and remanded in custody until 2 February.

The incident amused the emergency services as well as the two students – this firefighter even stopped for a picture.
